Job Summary

The Health Economics Lead has the responsibility of leading a variety of diverse health economic research projects, under the supervision and guidance of a Principal. 

The Health Economics Lead reports to a Principal, and line manages at least one or more members of the Research and/or Data teams. The Health Economics Lead works collaboratively with other members of the Management Team to support a positive team culture, improve internal capabilities, and seek new opportunities for Medlior to positively impact global health. 

Given the nature of the role, the Health Economics Lead needs to be comfortable with leading non-health economics research projects, flexible in shifting priorities and a variable workload, and working within the constraints of tight timelines. 

Job requirements

The job functions of the Health Economic Lead include but are not limited to, the following:

  • Engage actively with the project team to provide advice on health economic study feasibility
  • Assess the health policy landscape and provide recommendations to clients
  • Lead proposal development on the design, methodology, timelines, and budget for health economic projects
  • Lead internal and external discussions regarding study methodology, understanding the big picture needs of our clients and how to design a model to provide meaningful results
  • Lead and execute health economic studies (e.g., cost-effectiveness studies, cost-of-illness, utility assessment, database analysis, budget impact models, etc.).
    • Development of models/tools from concept through publication
    • Ensure quality and accuracy of design, execution, and reporting of results
    • Review (quality control) of code and results from other analysts, including validation
  • Provide expert recommendation on data modeling (relationships, data types, tables) and analytics concepts (queries, reporting, association of data sources)
  • Effectively communicate health economic and outcomes research findings internally and externally
    • Support the integration of HEOR evidence into HTA submissions
    • Review HTA submissions for content and quality to ensure alignment with strategy
    • Lead interaction with health technology appraisal authorities and advisors/key external experts in preparing materials for scientific advice or reimbursement submissions
  • Conduct literature reviews of methodology to inform study protocols, project proposals, marketing products, build internal capacity, etc. and maintain updated knowledge of the requirements and trends across global HTA organizations and other reimbursement authorities
  • Develop and lead implementation of SOPs for Medlior economic modelling activities, including:
    • Build “Medlior” methodology guides and efficiencies for conducting modelling projects
    • Build documentation standards for model development and file organization
    • Ensure compliance with data security practices at Medlior (backing up data, code, etc.)
    • Lead training and implementation of SOPs for junior health economists
    • Ensure consistent execution of SOPs across the health economics team
    • Identify new software, programs, technology, or methods to advance modeling practices
  • Contribute to the marketing of our economic capabilities to new and current clients.

General Responsibilities

 The Health Economic Lead will work closely with the Principal who will have strategic project oversight and who will serve as final sign-off for all project deliverables.

The Health Economics Lead is responsible for the following project-level activities:

  • Discussing and approving the project strategy with the Principal
  • Escalating resource/organizational issues raised by the project team to the Principal
  • Leading client communications and external meetings, unless otherwise delegated
    • Seeking approval from the Principal for all communications regarding adjustments in scope, budget, and timelines
    • Managing the project budget, timelines, and internal resources:
    • Reviewing and approving project hours and timelines
    • Overseeing the work of junior staff and contractors, including delegating responsibilities, ensuring accountability, and reviewing contractor invoices and timesheets
    • Overseeing the effective use of project-related tools (e.g., Distiller, EndNote, ShareFile, Asana)
  • Reviewing and approving project deliverables for Principal sign-off, ensuring all final outputs are accurate, valid, and reliable
    • Ensuring all client feedback has been addressed appropriately or flagged for discussion
    • Ensuring clear, concise, accurate, and meaningful interpretation, communication, and presentation of results
    • Identifying and discussing the need for scope amendments with the Principal

Additionally, the Health Economics Lead sits on the Management Team. As a member of the Management Tea, the Lead will:

  • Direct “non-billable” internal activities (e.g., draft proposals; pursue methodological advancements; line manage; lead in-house training activities; etc.)
  • Participate in recruiting, selecting, orienting, and training employees
  • Coach and mentor junior staff
  • Provide and seek regular feedback from all members of project teams
  • Recommend opportunities for business development (e.g., scope amendments, etc.)
  • Recommend opportunities for internal process/procedural improvements

Qualifications:

  • Graduate degree in health economics
  • Minimum of 5-years of professional health economic experience
  • Minimum of 5-years of experience with project management
  • Minimum of 3-years of experience with people management
  • Comprehensive understanding of health services research concepts and how to use health economic models to support HTA submissions
  • Proven ability to apply health economic methods/principles to health services research
  • Demonstrated attention to detail in programming and resolving model anomalies
  • High-level proficiency with MS Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) to develop project deliverables/models
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills are essential
  • Ability to work effectively in multi-disciplinary project teams and provide direct feedback on tasks completed to ensure high-quality deliverables within agreed timelines
  • Ability and desire to work in an entrepreneurial environment, including willingness to take on responsibilities outside one’s typical scope of work
  • Ability to motivate teams and demonstrate pride in the project deliverables
