Research Manager

Job Summary

The Research Manager has the responsibility of leading a variety of diverse health outcomes research projects under the supervision and guidance of a Research Lead.

The Research Manager will work within the Medlior team to complete a variety of project-related tasks, including, but not limited to, contributing to study design development, study conduct, medical writing, project management, client liaising, managing contractors and junior staff, as well as responsibility for project deliverables.

The position will require work on primarily quantitative research projects. Given the nature of the position, applicants should be comfortable with shifting priorities, a variable workload, and working within the constraints of tight timelines.

Responsibilities and Duties

The job functions of the Research Manager include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Unless otherwise agreed, on a project by project basis, the Research Manager will act as the project manager. As a project manager, the Research Manager is responsible for:

General Project Management:

  • Discussing and agreeing on project and methodological strategy with the Research Lead
    • Raising any project-related issues with the Research Lead in timely and effective manner
    • Taking initiative to prepare deliverables and proposing solutions to project issues
  • Developing and maintaining project budget worksheets
    • Setting up, reviewing, and assessing project hours on Toggl
  • Managing project timelines using Gantt charts
  • Managing the project team and resources by assigning tasks and estimating hours for project tasks using Asana
  • Overseeing the work of Research Associates, Research Assistants, Research Students, and Contractors, including delegating responsibility, ensuring accountability, and reviewing contractor and student invoices and timesheets
  • Set-up and management/regular review of project-related tools (e.g., Distiller, EndNote, ShareFile, Qualtrics)

Communication:

  • Distributing internal team communications
  • Scheduling and leading internal and/or external meetings, including preparation of meeting agenda, meeting minutes, and PowerPoint presentation slides
  • Preparing and sending client communications with minimal supervision, except for communications regarding scope, budget, and timelines

Deliverables:

  • Contributing to the development of key project deliverables including but not limited to, protocols, study materials, reports, manuscripts, abstract and posters
  • Ensuring all client feedback has been addressed appropriately or flagged for discussion with the project team
  • Ensuring clear, concise, accurate, and meaningful interpretation, communication, and presentation of results
  • Ensuring deliverables are client-ready (according to the deliverables checklist and in alignment with Medlior brand standards) prior to review and sign-off by a Research Lead

 Other responsibilities and duties include:

  • Analyzing and reporting on diverse health outcomes research projects, with both a quantitative and qualitative nature
  • Participating in recruiting, selecting, orienting, and training employees
  • Coaching and mentoring junior staff (Research Associates, Research Assistants, Research Students)
  • Preparing and leading in-house training activities
  • Providing and seeking regular feedback from all members of project teams
  • Complying with all Medlior policies and procedures
  • Working in the best interests of Medlior and in accordance with the Core Values.

Qualifications

  • A research-based master’s degree or PhD including experience in a health research-related field
  • Familiarity with a variety of research methodologies, and at least an intermediate level understanding in at least one of Medlior’s area of focus on (i.e. HTA, health economics, RWE, or evidence generation)
  • Minimum of 5-years of experience with healthcare-related research (a combination of education and/or experience may be considered)
  • Minimum of 2-years of experience with project management
  • Experience with relevant software tools, including Microsoft Office;
  • Self-directed, ability to work successfully within a set timeframe
  • Strong written, oral, and presentation skills
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with all members of the Medlior team, and the ability to work in an environment of continuous change and growth

We work with pharmaceutical companies around the world, including global teams and in-country affiliates from Canada, the US, the UK, and Europe. Job Summary
The Data Scientist has the responsibility of working on a variety of diverse health outcomes research projects, under the supervision and guidance of a Principal.

The Data Scientist works collaboratively with other members of project teams to support a positive team culture, grow internal capacity, and seek new opportunities for Medlior to positively impact to global health.

The Data Scientist will work within the Medlior team to complete a variety of project-related tasks when needed, including, but not limited to protocol development, dataset creation and analysis plans, data analysis, reporting and dissemination, liaising with clients, and managing contractors and junior staff. Additionally, the Data Scientist may have the responsibility for signing-off certain project deliverables, with the approval of the Principal on the project.

The position requires work in quantitative research projects. Given the nature of the role, the Data Scientist will need to be comfortable with shifting priorities, a variable workload, and working within the constraints of tight timelines.

Medlior is based out of Calgary, Alberta, Canada, however, this role could be remotely based.

Job requirements
Although this role will primarily focus on real-world evidence and data analytics, the Data Scientist will also support other areas of work at Medlior. The job functions of the Data Scientist include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Data management, including using SAS to extract and merge data from Alberta administrative health datasets to assemble meaningful research ready datasets for examining research questions (e.g., cohort derivation, cleaning, linking, deriving variables, and validating datasets)
  • Exploratory, descriptive, and inferential analysis in SAS of administrative health data and survey study data according to specifications in project analysis plans; meta-analyses for systematic literature reviews, etc.
  • Verification of accuracy of data analysis, interpretation, and reporting of results
  • Review (quality control) of code and results from other analysts, including cohort and variable validation and outputs
  • Ensuring clear, concise, accurate, and meaningful interpretation, communication, and presentation of results
  • Engaging actively with the project team to provide advice on research feasibility, design, methodology, availability of Alberta administrative health data
  • Developing analytical plans for proposals and protocols, dataset creation and statistical analysis plans, reporting, and dissemination
  • Contributing estimates of timelines and resource allocation for data analysis
  • Discussing and approving the analytical strategy with the Project Lead/Principal
  • Conducting literature reviews of methodology to inform study protocols, project proposals, marketing products, build internal capacity, etc.
  • Development and implementation of SOPs for Medlior data analytics
  • Implementing a data management strategy (e.g. documentation of all analyses and file organization)
  • Ensuring data security at Medlior (backing up data, code, etc.)
  • Building “Medlior” methodology guides and efficiencies (e.g. SAS Macros) in data management and statistical analysis and ensuring execution of sound and consistent statistical methodology
  • Escalating resource/organizational issues to the Project Lead/Principal
  • Contributing to or leading client communications and external meetings (regarding analytical materials or issues)
  • Ensuring all client feedback has been addressed appropriately or flagged for discussion
  • Identifying and discussing the need for scope amendments with the Project Lead/Principal
  • Participate in recruiting, selecting, orienting, and training employees
  • Coach and mentor junior staff
  • Provide and seek regular feedback from all members of project teams
  • Continuing to maintain and expand professional skills including expertise in the use of administrative and other health data
  • Supporting other projects at Medlior, including evidence generation, health technology assessments, etc.

Qualifications

Required knowledge and skills
o Master’s degree in relevant discipline including statistics, biostatistics, epidemiology, health services research, or a related field
o Knowledge of health administrative coding and data holdings available in Alberta
o Understanding of health services research concepts and how to use administrative data in health services research
o Ability to apply statistical and epidemiological methods/principles to health services research is preferred
o Demonstrated experience using SAS with administrative health data including competence in SQL and macro writing
o Demonstrated attention to detail in programming and resolving data anomalies
o Two to five years’ experience with health administrative databases
o High-level proficiency with MS Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) to develop project deliverables/models
o Strong written and verbal communication skills are essential
o Ability to work effectively in multi-disciplinary project teams and provide direct feedback on tasks completed to ensure high-quality deliverables within
agreed timelines
o Ability and desire to work in an entrepreneurial environment, including willingness to take on responsibilities outside one’s typical scope of work
o Ability to motivate teams and demonstrate pride in the project deliverables
