Data Scientist Assistant

Position: Data Scientist Assistant

Job Summary

The Data Scientist Assistant has the responsibility for providing research assistance on a variety of diverse health outcomes research projects under the supervision and guidance of a Research Lead and/or Biostatistician. Reporting to the Research Lead, the Data Scientist will work within the Medlior team, to complete a variety of research and analytical-related tasks, including, but not limited to protocol development, dataset creation and analysis plans, data analysis and visualization, and reporting and dissemination.  

The position will require work on both qualitative research projects. Given the nature of the position, applicants should be comfortable with shifting priorities, a variable workload, and working within the constraints of tight timelines.

Responsibilities and Duties

Although this role will primarily focus on real-world evidence and data analytics, the Data Scientist Assistant will also support other areas of work at Medlior. The job functions of the Data Scientist Assistant include, but are not limited to, the following:

o   Data management, including using SAS to extract and merge data from Alberta administrative health datasets to assemble meaningful research-ready datasets for examining research questions (e.g., cohort derivation, cleaning, linking, deriving variables, and validating datasets)

o   Support in exploratory, descriptive, and inferential analysis in SAS of administrative health data and survey study data according to specifications in project analysis plans; meta-analyses for systematic literature reviews, etc.

o   Verification of accuracy of data analysis, interpretation, and reporting of results

o   Ensuring clear, concise, accurate, and meaningful interpretation, communication, and presentation of results

o   Engaging actively with the project team to provide support on the study design, methodology, and availability of Alberta administrative health data

o   Support in developing analytical plans for proposals and protocols, dataset creation and statistical analysis plans, reporting, and dissemination

o   Discussing the analytical strategy with the Lead Biostatistician/Principal

o   Conducting literature reviews of methodology to inform study protocols, project proposals, marketing products, build internal capacity, etc.

o   Adherence to SOPs for Medlior data analytics

o   Contributing to “Medlior” methodology guides and efficiencies (e.g. SAS Macros) in data management and statistical analysis and ensuring execution of sound and consistent statistical methodology

o   Raising project-related issues with the Project Manager in a timely and effective manner, providing context and potential solutions

o   Contributing to client communications and external meetings (regarding analytical materials or issues)

o   Ensuring all client and internal feedback has been addressed appropriately or flagged for discussion

o   Provide and seek regular feedback from all members of project teams

o   Continuing to maintain and expand professional skills including expertise in the use of administrative and other health data

o   Effective communication of workload with Project Managers and Line Managers

Qualifications

·       Required knowledge and skills

o   Master’s degree in a relevant discipline including statistics, biostatistics, epidemiology, health services research, or a related field

o   Knowledge of health administrative coding and data holdings available in Alberta

o   Understanding of health services research concepts and how to use administrative data in health services research

o   Demonstrated attention to detail in programming and resolving data anomalies

o   Experience with relevant software tools, including Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint), EndNote, and Tableau

o   Strong written and verbal communication skills are essential

o   Ability to work effectively in multi-disciplinary project teams and provide direct feedback on tasks completed to ensure high-quality deliverables within agreed timelines

Job Summary

 

The Research Manager has the responsibility of managing a variety of diverse health outcomes research projects under the supervision and guidance of a Research Lead. All of your projects will be ultimately overseen a Principal.

 

The Research Manager will work within the Medlior team to complete a variety of project-related tasks, including, but not limited to, contributing to study design development, study conduct, medical writing, project management, client liaising, managing contractors and junior staff, as well as responsibility for project deliverables.

 

The position will require work on both quantitative and qualitative research projects. Given the nature of the position, applicants should be comfortable with shifting priorities, a variable workload, and working within the constraints of tight timelines.

Qualifications

 

·       A research-based graduate degree, in a scientific or healthcare-related discipline

·       Familiarity with a variety of research methodologies, and at least an intermediate level understanding in at least one of Medlior’s area of focus on (i.e., HTA, health economics, real world evidence, literature reviews, or medical writing)

·       Minimum of 5-years of experience with healthcare-related research (a combination of education and/or experience may be considered)

·       Minimum of 2-years of experience with project management

·       Excellent Microsoft Office skills

·       Self-motivated, highly organized, and detail oriented

·       Able to work successfully within a set timeframe

·       Exceptional written and oral communication skills

General Responsibilities

 

Generally, the Research Manager will act as the project manager. As a project manager, the Research Manager is responsible for:

 

General Project Management:

§  Discussing and agreeing on project and methodological strategy with the Research Lead

o  Raising any project-related issues with the Research Lead in timely and effective manner

o  Taking initiative to prepare deliverables and proposing solutions to project issues

§  Developing and maintaining project budget worksheets

o  Setting up, reviewing, and assessing project hours on Toggl

§  Managing project timelines using Gantt charts

§  Managing the project team and resources by assigning tasks and estimating hours for project tasks using Asana

§  Overseeing the work of Research Associates, Research Assistants, Research Students, and Contractors, including delegating responsibility, ensuring accountability, and reviewing contractor and student invoices and timesheets

§  Set-up and management/regular review of project-related tools (e.g., Distiller, EndNote, ShareFile, Qualtrics)

 

Communication:

§  Distributing internal team communications

§  Scheduling and leading internal and/or external meetings, including preparation of meeting agenda, meeting minutes, and PowerPoint presentation slides

§  Preparing and sending client communications with minimal supervision, except for communications regarding scope, budget, and timelines

 

Deliverables:

§  Contributing to the development of key project deliverables including but not limited to, protocols, study materials, reports, manuscripts, abstract and posters
